Tomorrow’s Trip and Forms for Next Year

A few quick notes about tomorrow’s trip and forms that need to be submitted for next year:

Family of Schools Trip

  • Please bring (or wear) your choir uniform to school.
  • At the beginning of period 2 meet in the vocal room.  We will have a quick chat and load equipment, then you’ll have a chance to change and eat lunch.
  • The bus departs at 11:00am.  We will be performing at Shanty Bay and Steele Street Public Schools.
  • We will return by 2:30pm. Those who volunteered (and anyone else not running to catch a bus) will stay and unload. Pizza will be provided.

If you’re concerned about missing period 2, please let me know.  We can arrange for you to attend this class as long as you are dressed and ready to get on the bus by 11:00am.

Forms for Next Year

Blank copies of all forms are available in the entryway to the vocal room.

  • If you are interested in being on next year’s executive council, I need to have the application form by Tuesday, May 21 (ignore the original deadline of May 20 as it is the holiday Monday).
  • If you are interested in being in chamber choir or senior vocal ensemble next year, I need the form in by Friday, May 31.  Returning members to these ensembles must also hand in a form, however an audition is only required if you want to be in an ensemble that you were not in this year.

Finally, don’t forget we have our year end pizza party and council voting on both lunch periods on Wednesday, May 22.

Gala Follow-Up and End of Year

Thank you to everyone for an amazing show last Thursday evening! All your efforts paid off! I will text choir members a video link.

Here’s what the remainder of the year is looking like for choir:

  • Tuesday, May 7 – Chamber Choir CANCELLED
  • Wednesday, May 8 – Concert Choir until 4:00pm
  • Friday, May 10 – Field Trip forms due for Family of Schools Tour (available in the vocal room doorway or by PDF download)
  • Wednesday, May 15 – Family of Schools Trip, periods 2-5. Please return all your music and black folders by the end of this trip if you are not currently taking a vocal class.  After school, I will need a few volunteers to help unload equipment. There will be some pizza available for volunteers!
  • Wednesday, May 22 – More pizza!  On both lunch periods, we will be having our choir party lunch along with voting for executive council positions for next year.

Next Year’s Executive Council

If you are interested, please pick up an application form from me (or PDF download), and have it returned by Monday, May 20.

Auditions

Auditions are required for those interested in the following ensembles next year:

  • Chamber Choir
  • Chamber Choir – Competitive Core
  • Senior Vocal Ensemble (for next year’s grade 11s and 12s only)

If you were in any of these this year, you do NOT need to re-audition for them. However, you will need to state your intention to be part of them again next year on a form to be given out on May 8 (the form will also be available in the vocal room entrance by the attendance binder, or PDF download). The only reason you would not be re-accepted into one of these ensembles is if you did not adequately fulfill your commitment to them this year.

You will be able to sign-up for auditions soon on the vocal room door.  Auditions will take place during the last week of May and first week of June. Details regarding what to expect in the auditions will be included on the form you will receive on May 8.

Final Gala Information

We have a busy week coming up, so here’s all the information in one place for you:

Matinee Update

It’s been approved, however they want us to do it in period 5 rather than period 2. More info on this below.

Documents/Videos

Here are the links to all the resources I’ve sent out over the past couple of weeks:

  • Lyrics to memorize
  • Choreography videos [ text/email/see me for the link – will not be posted publicly ]
  • Scheduling/Draft Program (PDF) – including dress rehearsal schedule
  • Costuming (PDF) – Costuming notes:
    • For the matinee there will be no costume changes. Pick your favourite costume from the evening performance and wear it for the full matinee!
    • There is no specific costume for the Gala Finale. Just keep on your most recent costume.
    • Please take care during costume changes that you keep your articles of clothing all together to avoid lost items.

The “Where” and “When”

  • Wednesday, May 1
    • Come to the cafeteria at the beginning of period 5 for our dress rehearsal.  You do not need to be in costume. Concert choir will be done by 3:00 at the latest.  If you’re in other things, see the rehearsal schedule (found by clicking on the Scheduling/Draft Program link above)
  • Thursday, May 2
    • Period 2 – Final rehearsal in the cafeteria. This is the last chance to fix any last minute problems that occurred the evening prior. If you have a class period 2 that you absolutely can’t miss I can live with that, but please come if at all possible!
    • 12:45pm (halfway through period 4) – Meet in the cafeteria to prepare for the matinee
    • 1:30-2:30pm – Matinee performance
    • 6:45pm – Arrive, drop costuming off in change rooms (down the tech hall – signs will be posted)
    • 7:00pm – Warm-up in the vocal room
    • 7:30pm – Gala begins. It will last approximately two hours. Following the Gala, everyone needs to stay for 15 minutes or so to help clean up.
    • 10:15pm – Social at Moose Winooski’s on Bayfield Street (optional – parents responsible for transportation)

Tickets

  • $10 each, available online until April 30 (preferred purchase method). Tickets purchased online will be distributed to students at the dress rehearsal on May 1.
  • Tickets can also be purchased in the music office by cash or cheque (made out to Eastview Secondary School), or at the door by cash.

I think that covers everything! If there’s any other questions please get in touch. Looking forward to next Thursday!

Gala Tickets

Hi Everyone,

Tickets for the Gala are now available to be purchased for $10 each (free for children under 5). The preferred method of purchase is via SchoolCashOnline, but students may also bring in cash or a cheque made out to Eastview Secondary School. Online purchasing will be available until Tuesday, April 30, and tickets will be distributed to students at our dress rehearsal on Wednesday, May 1. Tickets will also be available at the door for cash.

Please reach out to as many people as you can who might be interested in seeing this show. The better we do with ticket sales, the less we need to ask you for in September for the ensemble fee!

Quick notes/reminders:

  • This week’s and next week’s concert choir rehearsals are in the cafeteria. All music and choreography should now be memorized. Lyrics can be found here.
  • The Gala is on Thursday, May 2 at 7:30pm, and students should arrive by 6:45. We’re still waiting on the office for the final word on whether we will be permitted to run a buy-in matinee on the same day in the morning.
  • A draft of the program order and dress rehearsal schedule are posted on the vocal room door and online here for students to review and provide feedback.
  • Permission forms for our Family of Schools Tour will be due on Friday, May 10. Forms are available for pick-up in the music office. There is no cost.

Lyrics to Memorize for Gala

Video Killed the Radio Star

[SOLO SECTION]
I heard you on the wireless back in fifty two

Lying awake intent at tuning in on you
If I was young it didn’t stop you coming through
Oh a oh

They took the credit for your second symphony
Rewritten by machine on new technology
And now I understand the problems you can see
Oh a oh

I met your children
Oh a oh

What did you tell them?

[EVERYONE]
Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star

Pictures came and broke your heart
Oh, a, a, a, oh

And now we meet in an abandoned studio
We hear the playback and it seems so long ago
And you remember the jingles used to go
Oh-a oh

You were the first one
Oh-a oh

You were the last one

Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star
In my mind and in my car, we can’t rewind we’ve gone to far
Oh-a-aho oh
Oh-a-aho oh

Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star
In my mind and in my car, we can’t rewind we’ve gone too far
Pictures came and broke your heart
Put down the blame on VCR

Oh, you are a radio star
You are a radio star
Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star

Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star

Friends Theme

So no one told you life was gonna be this way
Your job’s a joke, you’re broke
Your love life’s D.O.A
It’s like you’re always stuck in second gear
When it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month
Or even your year, but

I’ll be there for you
(When the rain starts to pour)
I’ll be there for you
(Like I’ve been there before)
I’ll be there for you
(‘Cause you’re there for me too)

You’re still in bed at ten
And work began at eight
You’ve burned your breakfast, so far
Things are going great
Your mother warned you there’d be days like these
But she didn’t tell you when the world has brought
You down to your knees and

I’ll be there for you
(When the rain starts to pour)
I’ll be there for you
(Like I’ve been there before)
I’ll be there for you
(‘Cause you’re there for me too)

[SOLO SECTION]
No one could ever know me

No one could ever see me
Seems you’re the only one who knows
What it’s like to be me
Someone to face the day with
Make it through all the rest with
Someone I’ll always laugh with
Even at my worst, I’m best with you, yeah

[EVERYONE AGAIN]
It’s like you’re always stuck in second gear
When it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month
Or even your year

I’ll be there for you
(When the rain starts to pour)
I’ll be there for you
(Like I’ve been there before)
I’ll be there for you
(‘Cause you’re there for me too)

I’ll be there for you
I’ll be there for you
I’ll be there for you
(‘Cause you’re there for me too)

Africa

Note – only the men’s section needs to memorize the lyrics for the verses.  Everyone sings in the chorus.

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She’s coming in, 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say, “Hurry boy, it’s waiting there for you”

It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had (ooh, ooh)

The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what’s right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what’s deep inside, frightened of this thing that I’ve become

It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had (ooh, ooh)

Hurry boy, she’s waiting there for you

It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa

Gonna take some time to do the things we never had (ooh, ooh)

Youtube Mash-up Lyrics

‘Cause if you like the way you look that much
Oh baby you should go and love yourself
And if you think that I’m still holdin’ on to somethin’
You should go and love yourself
You should go and love yourself

Hey, I just met you and this is crazy
But here’s my number, so call me maybe
It’s hard to look right at you baby
But here’s my number, so call me maybe
Hey I just met you and this is crazy
But here’s my number, so call me maybe
And all the other boys try to chase me
But here’s my number, so call me maybe

You watch me bleed until I can’t breathe
I’m shaking falling onto my knees
And now that I’m without your kisses
I’ll be needing stitches
I’m tripping over myself
Aching begging you to come help
And now that I’m without your kisses
I’ll be needing stitches

That gun is loaded, but it’s not in my hand
That gun is loaded, but it’s not in my hand
The fire burns, I’m not the one with the match, man
That gun is loaded, but it’s not in my hand

Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

Gala Costuming and Tickets, Feeder Schools Trip

Hi Everyone,

Just a few quick things:

  • See this document (PDF) for information on Gala costuming.  We are not expecting students to spend much (if any) money on costuming. Just get as close as you can with what you own, what you can borrow, or possibly what you might want to pick up at Value Village or the Dollar Store! We had some issues last year with lost articles of clothing following the Gala, so please either label your clothing or take other precautions to ensure everything makes it back home.
  • Tickets for the Gala will be on sale soon for $10 each. This year we will also allow online purchases for Gala tickets. Stay tuned for details!
  • We have confirmed the May 15 date for our annual Family of Schools trip.  The trip will take place during periods 2, 3, 4 and 5, and we will be visiting Steel Street and Shanty Bay Public Schools this year.  Permission forms will be sent home soon, and there is no extra cost for this trip.
  • We have our last coffeehouse of the year tonight (Friday), beginning at 7pm in the library. We’d love to see lots of choir members come out!

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and have a great weekend!

Choir Updates

Please be reminded that our Gala date is Thursday, May 2, which leaves us with only three more regular concert choir rehearsals until our final run through on stage with the band on May 1. The number of absences at Wednesday’s rehearsal was quite concerning, particularly among those people who didn’t sign-out or otherwise inform us of the absence. The Gala event has traditionally been a favourite for choir members, but we need everyone to continue to hang in there for the next few weeks to make it a success. For those of you doing spring sports, please speak with me; we can work around your sports schedules, but we just need to chat to figure it out.

A couple other quick things:

  • We started some choreography this week.  Videos of what we have done so far are posted online for those who missed the rehearsal or need to do some extra practice.  These will continue to be updated each week.
  • Our family of schools tour has been penciled in for Wednesday, May 15, from periods 2-5.  More information and permission forms will be available once we receive final approval.

The next piece of information to come along will be regarding Gala costuming. I hope to have that available to pass along at some point next week.

Gala Auditions

We have fewer applicants than usual this year and I’ve work with all applicants extensively, so a formal audition process will not be necessary.  Everyone who applied will be accepted into the evening Gala, subject to a few conditions listed below. We won’t be able to get everyone in the matinee, but this will be decided at a later time.

Applicant(s) Notes/Conditions
Alyssa B
(I Wanna Dance)
Please provide sheet music by Fri Mar 22.
Sam V
(Thank you for the music)
Please provide sheet music by Fri Mar 22
Vanessa V
(Never be like you)
Please provide sheet music by Fri Mar 22
Mary W
(Wish You Were Here)
Alyssa, Maddie, Hailey
(Mash-Up)
We should be able to work on this a bit in class as well. We’ll discuss after March Break how we might put this all together with the additional songs.
Cam, Blake, Claire, Jehvon, Andrew (Creep, Stand by Me) We should be able to get both songs in, BUT we do need to find a time when you can all get together to rehearse. I know this group has already worked pretty extensively on these songs, so we don’t need a lot of time, but we will need to find some.
Zelda Group and Sr. Vocal Ensemble (Evolution of Music) These two selections will be a pretty ambitious undertaking.  We’ll need to talk… either you’ll need to find more rehearsal time (even if some of it is just sectional rehearsal time), or we will need to scale this back somewhat.  We should also come up with a backup plan if these end up just being about half ready as the Gala approaches.

Jehvon – Awesome Zelda arrangement!  I have just a few small suggestions… mainly the sopranos will be getting quite a workout in the introductory theme, and it might make sense to transpose this section down a little bit for them.

Semester 2 Startup

Welcome back everyone! A few items:

February Rehearsals

  • Concert Choir
    • Each Wednesday, full choir, ending at 4:00pm
  •  Chamber Choir
    • February 5, 12, and 19 will continue to be the competitive core only, until 4:00pm
    • February 26 will be everyone going to Sudbury only, including members not in the competitive core (to rehearse for our concert in Parry Sound), until 4:00pm

Text message announcements via Remind

Those on the Roger’s network are no longer able to receive text messages from the Remind service, due to an imposed fee. At the first rehearsal in February, details will be provided for a replacement to this system that will work on everyone’s phones.

Sudbury

All forms and money are due this week. Online payments will close this Monday, February 4, however you can bring me forms and money in person to choir on Wednesday as well. I will provide final details in a week or two once I’ve received the schedule from the Festival.

Guest Presenter – Thursday, February 7

All choir and vocal students are invited to the cafeteria during period 2 this Thursday for a presentation by Brett Caswell. Brett will be introducing us to an entirely new concept of a “choir”, and will speak about his ongoing work to bring this revolutionary idea to Barrie. Students who attend this presentation will be signed out of class for the period.

Grade 9, 10, 11 Students – Looking Ahead

As we approach the time for next year’s course selections, please be reminded that continuation in the choir next year requires students to choose a music course for one of their primary selections (not an alternate), and preferably vocal music. Unavoidable conflicts will be considered on a case-by-case basis after course schedules have been determined, but the music course selection must be made on the option sheet.

The courses are the foundation of everything else that happens in the choral music program, and are the primary reason for Eastview’s success in this area. Enrolling in these courses is the number one thing students can do to help ensure the program stays strong into the future, and that we can continue to offer the opportunities we do.

Finally, I’m looking at a possible choir trip to New York City in the fall. I’ve teamed up with Caswell Community Choirs (who we will be hearing about at Thursday’s presentation) to make this a combined trip between them and us. Since the trip will be organized through a community organization rather than the school board, we won’t need to go through the approval process that kept this year’s planned trip to Boston from happening. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.

Let me know if there are any questions, and I look forward to seeing everyone soon!

This Week’s Reminders

A few things to note before things get busy next week:

  • Important Rehearsal this Week – The last one on our own before all our Christmas performances. Please be there!
  • Sudbury/Parry Sound Trip – Thank you for those who met last Friday’s deadline. I will continue to accept forms/payment this week, however we are very close to filling one bus, and we would only get a second bus if there are enough people to make it cost effective.
  • Forms due this Wednesday – This Wednesday is the due date for the package of forms sent home for all the Christmas performances. For the dinner being offered on November 28, this deadline is firm. I will continue to accept other items, such as ticket purchases, for as long as there is availability. I’d appreciate all permission forms in by the end of the week, particularly for Sainte Marie.
  • For your planning – Family of Schools Concerts – Here is the sequence of events for the Family of Schools concerts on November 28 and 29:
    • 6:30pm – Arrive
    • 6:45pm – Warm-up in room 204
    • 7:00pm – Concert begins – If there is room in the cafe, please attend the first part of the concert on one of the two nights
    • 7:30pm – Be in the cafe or in the front foyer, ready to go on stage. Chamber Choir will be on sometime between around 7:40 to 8:10, followed by the Concert Choir.
    • 8:15-8:45pm – Concert is expected to end in this time window
    • If you cannot make it in time for warm-up: Please do your own warm-up, and be ready to go on by 7:30pm
