Courses
We offer vocal and orchestral courses from grades 9-12, as well as classical guitar and music technology courses for upper year students. All courses, with the exception of Music Technology, include performance elements.
Incoming grade nine students who want to make the most of their musical experience at Eastview are encouraged to enroll in both AMV1O (Grade 9 Vocal Music), and one of the grade nine orchestral music courses. Choral Music
AMV 1O – Grade 9 Vocal Music, Open
This course is appropriate for beginning and experienced grade nine students, and for grade 10 students who have not yet taken an Eastview music course or have prior relevant experience. Students are introduced to vocal technique, choral repertoire, music theory, keyboard and musical analysis.AMV 2O – Grade 10 Vocal Music, Open
This is a continuation of the grade nine course. Before enrolling in this course, students are recommended to have completed AMV 1O, or to discuss their musical background with a music teacher. This course builds on both the theoretical and practical elements introduced in grade nine.AMV 3M – Grade 11 Vocal Music, College/University Preparation
This course builds upon the skills attained by students during the previous two years, and begins to prepare students for vocal music at the college or university level. Students are introduced to advanced theory and analysis concepts, begin basic harmony, and gain independence in their ability to learn choral and solo repertoire.AMV 4M – Grade 12 Vocal Music, College/University Preparation
The final course in the vocal music stream continues to prepare students to enter a college or university music program. Upon completion of this course, students will have attained strong sight singing and ear training skills, will have had the opportunity to sing and perform advanced choral repertoire, and will have a solid background in theory, harmony, history, and analysis.AMR 4M – Grade 12 Choral Repertoire
This course is offered ONLY to students who have already completed Grade 12 Vocal AMV 4M. Students who study AMR 4M must be self-motivated and self-directed in their study of solo and choral repertoire. This course enables students to enhance their musical literacy through the creation and performance of music. Students will analyse how to apply skills developed in music to their life and careers.
Orchestral Music
AMO 1O – Grade 9 Inexperienced woodwind, brass and percussion
Students will learn to play flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba, or percussion (instruments are supplied). Students learn to read music on their chosen instrument as well as proper breath support, posture, articulation and tone production. The basics of music theory, analysis, composition and ear training are also introduced.AMS 1O – Grade 9 Inexperienced strings
Students will learn to play violin, viola, cello, or double bass (instruments are supplied). Students learn to read music on their chosen instrument as well as proper posture, position, bowing, and tone production. The basics of music theory, analysis, composition, and ear training are also introduced.AME 1O – Experienced strings, winds, brass and percussion
This course is appropriate for experienced grade nine students who already play a string (violin, viola, cello, double bass), woodwind (flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon) or brass (trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba) instrument (instruments are supplied). Students will continue to develop tone production, articulation, technical ability, and reading skills on their chosen instrument. Music theory, analysis, composition, and ear training will be covered at the introductory level. (Note: Students who already play non-orchestral instruments such as piano, guitar, or drums should choose AMO1O or AMS1O.)
AMO 2O – Grade 10 Orchestral Music
Students will continue to play the orchestral instrument that they learned to play in grade 9 music. Students continue to develop music reading skills as well as proper breath support, posture, articulation and tone production. Music theory, analysis, composition, and ear training are covered at the intermediate level.
AMO 3M – Grade 11 Orchestral Music
This course continues the development of performance skills on the chosen instrument through solo, ensemble, and orchestral music. Students learn advanced theory, composition, and analysis concepts and begin the study of harmony.AMO 4M – Grade 12 Orchestral Music
Students will gain independence in learning solo, ensemble, and orchestral music for their chosen instrument. The study of harmony, theory, and analysis is continued at the advanced level with many opportunities for independent work and composition.AMR 4M – Grade 12 Orchestral Repertoire
This course is offered ONLY to students who have already completed Grade 12 Orchestra AMO 4M. Students who study AMR 4M must be self-motivated and self-directed in their study of solo and orchestral repertoire. This course enables students to enhance their musical literacy through the creation and performance of music for their own instrument. Students will analyse how to apply skills developed in music to their life and careers.
Classical Guitar
AMG 2O – Grade 10 Beginning Classical Guitar, Open
Students will learn to play the classical guitar. Students learn to read music for the guitar as well as proper posture, position, articulation and tone production. The basics of music theory, analysis, composition, and ear training are also introduced.AMG 3M – Grade 11 Classical Guitar, College/University Preparation
This course continues the development of performance skills on the classical guitar through solo, duet and ensemble music. Students learn advanced theory, composition, and analysis concepts and begin the study of harmony. In June, students will perform as an ensemble in a class recital.AMG 4M – Grade 12 Classical Guitar, College/University Preparation
Students will gain independence in learning solo, duet, and ensemble music for the classical guitar. The study of harmony, theory, and analysis is continued at the advanced level with many opportunities for independent work and composition. In June, students will perform solos and as an ensemble in a class recital.
Music Technology
AMM 3M – Grade 11 Music and Computers, College/University Preparation
This course is available to students who have completed at least one high school music course or have equivalent musical experience. Students will learn about technologies related to music production and related compositional techniques. They will be introduced to digital audio workstations (DAWs), music notation software, audio effects, live mixing, and basic strategies for writing electronic music.AMM 3O – Grade 11 Music and Computers, Open
This course is appropriate for students who little to no musical experience, who are interested in learning in a unique manner. Students will learn about technologies related to music production and related compositional techniques. They will be introduced to digital audio workstations (DAWs), music notation software, audio effects, live mixing, and basic strategies for writing electronic music.
